How long does the BMW manufacturer warranty last?
Every new BMW comes with a 3-year warranty with unlimited mileage, confirmed directly on BMW's own UK site, and includes BMW Roadside Assistance for the same period.
BMW Approved Used cars come with a minimum of 12 months' cover for the battery, exhaust system, and other components against manufacturing defects, plus Roadside Assistance and MOT Protect cover.
Genuine BMW parts carry a 2-year warranty. Paintwork is covered separately for 36 months with no mileage limit, for defects like blistering, discolouration or staining caused by faulty manufacture — not external damage.
Electric and plug-in hybrid models: BMW's fully electric models get a 3-year unlimited mileage warranty plus a high-voltage battery warranty of up to 8 years or 100,000 miles. Plug-in hybrid models get a shorter battery warranty — 6 years or 60,000 miles — on top of the same 3-year unlimited mileage retailer warranty (note the third year of PHEV cover is only valid if the vehicle remains registered in the UK).

BMW's warranty excludes faults arising from misuse, negligence, accidents, or normal wear and tear, and doesn't extend to vehicles used for racing, rallying, or similar competitive events. Wiper blade rubber inserts are only covered if the fault is a manufacturing defect, not normal wear.
Keeping your warranty valid
BMW recommends servicing every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, at an authorised BMW service centre. The warranty automatically transfers to each new owner, as long as the conditions (including service intervals and no unauthorised modifications) have been followed.

BMW's own official extended warranty, "BMW Insured Warranty," has three tiers with different age/mileage rules: Comprehensive and Named Component cover are only available up to 100,000 miles, but the most basic DriveLine tier is available regardless of your BMW's age or mileage — worth checking if your car is older or higher-mileage than the top two tiers allow.
BMW's own Insured Warranty
BMW sells its own extended warranty directly, called BMW Insured Warranty, with three levels:
- Comprehensive — the highest level, covering most components including engine, gearbox, braking and electrical systems, plus wear and tear on covered components for the first 100,000 miles from registration. Not available once the car has passed 100,000 miles.
- Named Component — covers a wide range of components, also limited to vehicles under 100,000 miles.
- DriveLine — the most basic tier, covering the engine, transmission and drivetrain, with a claim limit of £5,000. Available regardless of the vehicle's age or mileage.
