Toyota warranty guide

Toyota car in for a service

Toyota's warranty works differently to most brands: a 3-year/60,000-mile base warranty, extended by a further 12 months/10,000 miles every single time you have the car serviced at an official Toyota centre, up to 10 years or 100,000 miles total. This works even on a used Toyota with no prior Toyota service history — which makes buying an extended warranty elsewhere less necessary for many owners than it would be for other brands.

How does the Toyota warranty work?

Every new Toyota comes with a manufacturer warranty of 3 years or 60,000 miles, confirmed directly on Toyota's own UK site (vehicles ordered before 1 June 2021 instead carry a 5-year/100,000-mile manufacturer warranty).

On top of this, Toyota's "Relax" scheme — described by Toyota as a first for the UK motor industry when launched on 1 June 2021 — extends cover by an additional 12 months or 10,000 miles every time the vehicle has a qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, up until the car is 10 years old or has covered 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Vehicles on a two-year service schedule instead get a 24-month/20,000-mile extension per qualifying service.

This works even on a used Toyota that's never been serviced at Toyota before — the very next qualifying service at an official Toyota centre activates it, regardless of the car's prior service history, as long as it's under 10 years old and under 100,000 miles. Lexus, Toyota's luxury division, offers a near-identical scheme called Lexus Relax — see our Lexus warranty guide for details.

WORTH KNOWING

The 10-year/100,000-mile Relax warranty cannot be extended further by Toyota once that limit is reached — it's the maximum available through this scheme (the hybrid battery specifically can extend further, covered below). If your Toyota is older or higher-mileage than this, a third-party provider is your only route to continued cover.

Hybrid battery and specialist models

Hybrid battery and component cover is included as part of the standard warranty up to 10 years/100,000 miles. Beyond that, owners can extend hybrid battery cover further — up to 15 years from the date of first registration — through a stand-alone scheduled Hybrid Health Check at a Toyota dealer, extending by a further 12 months each time. The battery warranty guarantees at least 70% of original capacity within the covered period.

The Toyota Mirai (hydrogen fuel cell) has different terms: 5 years or 60,000 miles for the battery and fuel cell components, with no mileage limit in the first year.

The GR Yaris carries one specific exception worth knowing: using it for track days or similar events does not invalidate the warranty, and manufacturing defects that occur during such use are supported under the warranty terms — unlike most manufacturer warranties, which typically exclude competition or track use entirely.

What's not covered

Toyota's warranty doesn't cover wear-and-tear items, bodywork, paint, interior trims, or maintenance parts, and any pre-existing defect present at the time of a service isn't covered. Anti-perforation (rust) is covered separately for 12 years with unlimited mileage on all Toyota models except the Hilux, and paintwork is covered separately for 3 years with unlimited mileage against surface rust.

Keeping your warranty valid and transferring it

The Relax warranty activates automatically on completion of a qualifying full or interim service at an official Toyota centre — no extra cost or paperwork required from the customer. It's transferable to subsequent owners (it follows the vehicle, not the original buyer), provided the mileage and age limits haven't been exceeded.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Toyota warranty in the UK?

Up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, made up of a 3-year/60,000-mile base warranty plus 12-month/10,000-mile extensions each time you service at an official Toyota centre.

Do I need a full Toyota service history to get the Relax warranty?

No — even a used Toyota with no prior Toyota service history can activate it at the next qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, as long as the car is under 10 years old and under 100,000 miles.

How long is the Toyota hybrid battery warranty?

Covered as part of the standard 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, and extendable up to 15 years from first registration via a stand-alone Hybrid Health Check.

Does track use void a Toyota warranty?

For the GR Yaris specifically, no — Toyota's own terms state track day use doesn't invalidate the warranty, an exception most other manufacturer warranties don't offer.
